Examples of participatory processes are: a process of electing committee members (where candidatures are first presented, then debated and finally a candidacy is chosen), participatory budgets (where proposals are made, valued economically and voted on with the money available), a strategic planning process, the collaborative drafting of a regulation or norm, the design of an urban space or the production of a public policy plan.

The Alghero Process aims to address the complex dilemmas surrounding renewable energy projects and their impact on cultural heritage, landscapes, and community well-being. The process is framed around the broader theme of “Balancing Renewable Energy and Social Justice,” integrating concepts of spatial justice, ecological inclusivity, and community decision-making.

The main objectives of the process are to foster inclusive decision-making by facilitating processes that enable local communities to participate meaningfully in deliberations about renewable energy projects. It also aims to promote spatial justice by ensuring equitable distribution of benefits and burdens related to energy infrastructure, considering geographical, cultural, and social dimensions. Another key objective is to integrate ecosystem voices by recognizing the rights and value of landscapes, cultural heritage, and ecosystems in decision-making processes. Additionally, the process seeks to enhance digital participation by testing the effectiveness of digital platforms in enabling inclusive and quality deliberation in rural areas often characterized by digital divides.
